Covi Pens vs Novo/Novi Style Pens
Cartridge compatibility, thread gauge and day-to-day ease of use
Updated August 6, 2026 · 8 min read
Covi-style pens and Novo/Novi-style pens are the two body standards you will run into when buying a reusable pen. The difference that matters is mechanical: which cartridges seat properly, and which needles thread on without cross-threading.
Wider cartridge chamber, coarser thread
Covi Style Pens
Covi-pattern bodies take a slightly wider cartridge chamber and use a coarser needle thread. They are common in generic peptide pen listings and usually the cheaper of the two.
Pros
- Accepts slightly out-of-spec cartridges without binding
- Coarse thread engages quickly, hard to cross-thread
- Widely available and inexpensive
Cons
- Loose fit lets thin cartridges rattle
- Fewer needle brands list explicit compatibility
- Dose windows are usually smaller
Best for: Mixed cartridge sources where a forgiving chamber saves trouble.
Tight standard chamber, fine pen-needle thread
Novo/Novi Style Pens
Novo-pattern bodies follow the mainstream 3 mL cartridge standard and the fine pen-needle thread used by the major needle brands, so compatibility is easy to verify before you buy.
Pros
- Works with the widest range of off-the-shelf pen needles
- Snug chamber means no cartridge movement
- Larger, clearer dose windows on most bodies
Cons
- Fine thread cross-threads if you rush
- Fussy about slightly oversized cartridges
- Usually costs more
Best for: Anyone who wants needle compatibility they can look up with confidence.

Check the cartridge before the pen
Both patterns accept a nominal 3 mL cartridge, but tolerances differ. A cartridge that seats with a faint rattle in a Covi body will often seat perfectly in a Novo-style one, and a slightly oversized cartridge does the reverse.
If you already have cartridges, measure the outer diameter and length before ordering a body. That one measurement removes most compatibility complaints.
Thread gauge and needle sourcing
The coarse Covi thread is forgiving: it engages in half a turn and is very hard to cross-thread with cold hands.
The fine Novo-style thread is the one virtually every pen needle on the market is cut for. That is the deciding factor for most people, because needles are a repeat purchase and the body is not.
Ease of use day to day
Novo-pattern bodies generally have the larger dose window and the longer dial travel, which makes small doses easier to read and set.
Covi bodies are shorter and lighter, which suits a bag or a travel case better than a bedside drawer.
The verdict
Novo/Novi-style is the safer default because pen needle compatibility is easy to verify and spare parts exist. Choose Covi only if you already own cartridges that seat better in the wider chamber, or if price is decisive.
